<p>1. The ameba is a single-celled organism that lives in water and feeds on bacteria, yeast cells, algae, etc. It moves by changing its shape from round to oval or vice versa.</p>
<p>2. Amebas are very small animals which live in freshwater ponds and lakes. They have no eyes but they can sense light. When it gets darker, they move towards the surface of the water where there is more light. If you put an ameba under a microscope, you would see that it looks like a blob (or ball) of jelly. Its body has many tiny hairlike structures called cilia. </p>
<p>3. An ameba is one of the simplest forms of life known as protozoans. Protozoan means first animal. This creature is so simple that scientists call them unicellular because they consist only of one cell.</p>
<p>4. A typical ameba consists of a nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm. The cytoplasm contains various chemical compounds including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, mineral salts, enzymes, hormones, and water. </p>
