1. Alluminium is a metal that has many uses in our daily life. It can be found in toothpaste, medicine and even cosmetics.
2. The first alluminium foil was produced by Dr. Lauber of Switzerland in 1910. He used it for wrapping chocolate bars.
3. In 1854 Henri Sainte-Claire Deville discovered an alloy of potassium and sodium which contained about 60% alluminum. This discovery led him to produce pure alluminium in 1855.
4. Alluminium was not known until 1761 when Guyton de Morveau proposed the name alumine after analyzing bauxite ore. However, he did not know what this new element looked like or its properties.
5. Aluminium is one of the most abundant elements on earth but it does not occur naturally as a free metal. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals such as cryolite, beryl, garnet and turquoise.
6. Alluminium is extracted from bauxite using electrolytic reduction process. Bauxite contains only 30 - 54 percent alluminium oxide (Al2O3). Therefore, large amounts of electricity are needed to reduce alluminium oxide into metallic alluminium.
7. A single gram of alluminium requires more than five thousand years to form in nature. That means we have to wait for another 5000 years before we get any more alluminium!
8. Alluminium is lightweight, nontoxic and ductile. These characteristics make it useful for transportation industries where weight saving is important.
